Grading System and Academic Year in Austria Education

The Austrian grading system offers a range of five different grades (1 to 5), basically a 5-point grading scale is being used, where 1 being the highest and 5 the lowest grade.

is the minimum passing grade

unsatisfactory (Nicht genugend)

It is the failing grade that is earned for less than 50% of the maximum achievable credit

In Austria, the GPA is the only criterion used for application purposes. The passing grades, i.e. 1-4 in the Gymnasium allow for further university study. For admittance to University, passing Matura is necessary.

European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System have been adopted by many universities to facilitate recognition of academic records.

Academic Year in Austria

In Schools

The Austrian school year for primary and secondary schools is divided into two terms:
 
First term begins on the first Monday in September in the states of Vienna, Burgenland and Lower Austria. The first term ends on the first Friday of February, in Vienna and Lower Austria. In Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, the first term concludes on the second Friday of February. The school year concludes on the last Friday of June in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland

Second term starts on the second Monday of September in Upper Austria, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol, Styria, and Vorarlberg. In Upper Austria and Styria it ends on the third Friday of February. The school year ends on the first Friday in July in Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg.

In Universities

The academic year is divided into two Semesters of about four months each, namely the winter term or winter semester, that usually begins in the first week of October and last until end of January the following year, and the summer semester, which extends from beginning of March till end of June.
