Admission Requirement of Higher Education Institutions in Austria

Admission to Austrian higher education is organized by the educational institutions themselves. Each Program and university has different requirements. Apply on time, thereby gaining yourself more chances of finding a place on a course of study you want.

Universities

For admittance to Universities, you can download an application form from the official website of the Austrian university of your choice or else the universities will send them to you. Fill in all the required details and send it to the Admissions Office – together with all necessary documents. Also students can submit admission application form online.

The documents required to be sent along the admission form to the Admission Office are: 

For Bachelor’s Programs

EU/EEA Students:
  • Proof of nationality, i.e. a photocopy of your passport
  • A secondary school leaving certificate that qualifies you to admittance to university studies in your home country. It should demonstrate that you’ve taken German lessons for at least 4 years or a German language diploma or similar documents
Non-EU/EEA Students:
  • Proof of nationality, i.e. a photocopy of your passport
  • A secondary school leaving certificate that qualifies you to admittance to university studies. It should demonstrate that you’ve taken German lessons for at least 4 years or a German language diploma or similar documents
  • The Special qualification certificate for university studies: You have to prove that you are eligible for admittance to your preferred degree program in the country which issued your secondary education diploma.

For Master's Programs-

For admittance to the Master program, you need to complete at least a 6 semester specialized relevant Bachelor’s degree with minimum 180 ECTS credits.

For PhD Programs-

Master’s degree in the same sphere of study as your research proposal or equivalent is mandatory for admission to a PhD program.

Dates and Deadlines for Universities

At universities, the closing date for application for the winter semester is September 5th and for the summer semester its February 5th.

Universities of Applied Sciences

For admissions to Universities of Applied Sciences courses, you need to apply online. The admission criterion varies from course to course.

For Bachelor’s Program:

The prerequisite for the admission to a bachelor’s program is as follows:
  • The general university entry qualification or relevant professional qualification: The secondary school-leaving examination (Reifeprufung/Matura) is an acceptable evidence of the general university entry qualification for UAS bachelor's degree programs and UAS diploma course of study.

For Master's Programs:

For admittance to the Master program, you need to complete at least a 6 semester specialized relevant Bachelor’s degree with minimum 180 ECTS credits.

Universities of the arts and UAS degree programs have different application deadlines. Contact the respective UAS.

University College of Teacher Education

For admission to the University College of Teacher Education, you have to register online. All information about the admission procedure and requirements can be found on the website of the respective University Colleges of Teacher Education.

Private Universities

Applicants must submit the application (on-line or off-line) form along with the necessary documentation to the Admissions Office.
Documentation:
  • A completed application form (online or offline) with the application fee
  • A photocopy of your passport
  • Academic documents: Official transcripts from your school or university 
  • Official transcripts demonstrating secondary school coursework and results of the past 3 years

General Documentation for Higher Education Institutions in Austria

Following are the significant documents needed at the time of applying to a particular course and institution: 
  • Academic: Grades and academic credentials
  • Application Form and Fee: Varies from course to course.
  • Evidence of your Qualification: Copies of your certificates or degree.
  • Scores: German Language Proficiency- TestDaF and English Language Proficiency- TOEFL/IELTS scores (if any applicable). 
  • Interview: Interview varies across different subjects and universities/colleges. Interview is an ideal way for the institutions to learn if you'd be a good fit for the course and the institution. Appropriate research and preparation can make you stand out from the bunch. Stay confident. Brush up your subject area and know your application information thoroughly.
  • Professional Experience: Some Master degree course of studies will require an experience between two and five years in the areas of study you are entering. 
  • Research Proposal: For Doctoral course of study, you need to take on a research project. A research proposal is an outline of what you intend to do for your research, and will include the subject, title, background, research methodology and interpretation of the research. 

Applying Procedure

You can send the application and necessary documents to the university, the University of Applied Sciences and University College of Teacher Education directly- online or offline. Or applications can be submitted to the Austrian representative authorities that will forward it to the concerned educational institution. Applications must be submitted at the university on time. 

Language Requirements for Studies in Austrian Universities

German Language Proficiency

Since the language of instruction at Austrian universities is German, applicants need to demonstrate their level of command of the German language. This can be done by submitting the results obtained at school examinations if you studied German as part of your course of study or by submitting German language courses diplomas, such as the TestDaF - Test of German as a Foreign Language

English Language Proficiency

If the language of instruction of your course is English, you are required to demonstrate your level of command of English. If you are a non-English native speaker you are required to take an English proficiency exam in order determine your English level
  • TOEFL-Test of English as a Foreign Language: Internet Based (iBT) minimum score required is 60 for Bachelor degree and 76 for Master degree
  • IELTS- International English Language Testing System: The minimum Score required is 6.0 for Bachelor and Master Degree students.
